(Heart) breaking news!
I never thought it would happen but our dear Father Tom is retiring and leaving us! I was so sad to hear the news , but it is like when a close family member says they are emigrating to Australia. You want them to go and have a nice life but boy will you miss them!
Although I am almost legally old enough to be Fr. Tom's parent, I have really looked upon him as a father. I always call him Father and not just Tom. I suppose it's an old fashioned idea that harks back to when the very rich or Royals had their own confessor and priest. For the last almost twenty years that is what we at Christ Church have had. Through thick and thin we have had someone totally reliable and a friend in need. I know that Father had worked in other Parishes but I am sure here on the Island he has had to face many challenges that other parts of Britain could only read about. As a life long resident of the Isle of Dogs, when I look at the diversity of our congregation it is almost unbelievable and wonderful at the same time. Fr. Tom has worked so hard to gain the respect and friendship of other Faiths here on the Island, but has also kept us aware of what is happening to Christians all over the world.
Last Sunday's Baptism and Confirmation Ceremony by the new Bishop of Stepney underlined Fr.Tom's part in attracting new people and welcoming them into the family that is Christchurch.
Dear Father Tom I would like to thank you for your never ending optimism, for always trying even when things don't always work out and for your great love and compassion for the people in your own Parish in your own little village in East London.
I am sure all of the congregation wish you the best of luck, good health and blessings but to sum it up in the highest Cockney Accolade you really are 'One of Our Own'.
May God Bless you and your family and keep you safe in all you do.
Barbara (and Don) Liddell.
