Icons and Bible Study

You may have noticed when Father Tom takes the service that on the screen behind him there is an icon. This icon is of Christ the Almighty, also known by its Greek name the ‘Pantocrator’. He is shown holding a book in his left hand and blessing with his right. The words on the book say “I am in my father, and you are in me, and I am in you “. The book is the gospels: the Word of Life.

Colours used in icons are symbolic. Christ is shown wearing a red garment with a blue cloak on top. Red is the symbol for our humanity while blue. Christ is shown as holy human and wholly divine. Halos of Christ always have a cross painted on them. There is another version of the ‘

Pantocrator’ hanging over the south door to the church.

Bible study

Before the lockdown started and we had always had a Bible study class which met at 11 o’clock on Monday mornings. Up until then we had been studying Saint Matthew’s Gospel, working our way through chapter by chapter. There is no reason why the present circumstances should in any way prevent this from happening. I would be more than happy to restart it Using “zoom “, the program that we’ve been using for services on Sunday. This would enable people to come together using computers, tablets or phones.

I would suggest that we would start by looking at Psalms, Discussing and getting to understand one or two each week. I could email the text for the psalms so that you could read them beforehand.

Could you please let either Father Tom or myself know if you will be interested in joining. My email address is alextrust@aol.com, telephone number 0207 515 5388. I would suggest that we start at 11 o’clock on Monday and that the session would take slightly more than one hour. In other days or times are more convenient please let me know.

Tom I think we should say something abou Rene. She was on the island throughout the war and lived in a house bang next door to the docs. She had won a scholarship to go to grammar school but this has been damage by bombing so she was not able to attend and had instead to start work. This is something she always regretted. When Father Rob Yeomans was the vicar she asked him what she should do for Lent. He suggested that she got up at 6,30 every morning and read her bible! That she carried on to do.
